Stop putting your fish in bowls.
I just finished a ten-hour shift at the shop, my back is screaming, but I still see people doing this every single day. It genuinely drives me insane.
You absolutely need a betta fish 5-gallon tank setup. Minimum. Anything smaller is just a toxic puddle of concentrated fish waste waiting to happen.
Here is my highly unpopular opinion that always makes the old-school guys mad. Plastic plants are complete garbage, and you should never put them in a betta tank. They rip up those beautiful, delicate fins like underwater razors.
Bettas are labyrinth fish. This means they actually breathe atmospheric air from the surface of the water using a specialized organ. If your small fish tank doesn’t have a tiny air gap under a tight lid, your fish will suffocate.
Your Fish is Freezing Right Now
Bettas are tropical fish from Southeast Asia. They need warm water, specifically kept between 75°F and 82°F. Cold water tanks just ruin their metabolism and trigger diseases like white spot.
Go buy a small, submersible thermostatic heater. Stick an old-school alcohol thermometer on the glass on the opposite side of the tank to monitor it. Trust me.
The Filter Mistake I Will Never Forget
Back in 2016, I bought a gorgeous half-moon betta and slapped a massive power filter on his tank. I woke up the next morning and found him pinned to the intake grate, completely exhausted and barely breathing. I literally cried on my bathroom floor because I almost killed a fish I loved.
Bettas hate strong water flow. A gentle sponge filter is all you need for proper betta fish care. It uses an airline to draw water through a sponge, housing the bacteria that break down ammonia without blowing your fish across the glass.
Tap Water Will Kill Your Pet
City water is packed with chlorine and chloramine to keep humans safe. Both of those chemicals are highly toxic to aquatic life and will burn their gills instantly. You absolutely must use a water conditioner before that tap water ever touches your betta.
Wait several weeks before adding your fish so your betta fish 5-gallon tank setup can grow beneficial bacteria. This is called the nitrogen cycle, and skipping it leads to “new tank syndrome,” where ammonia spikes and kills everything. Have some patience.
Stop scrolling and go check the temperature of your tank right now. If it is below 75°F, grab your keys, drive to the pet store, and buy an adjustable heater before they close. Your fish is relying on you to not mess this up.
